01. About this policy
This policy explains how Caption Muse handles information when you use the app and this website. Caption Muse is a video editing, captioning, and teleprompter app. Its core editing workflow stores your work on your device. Some optional features and purchase services use Apple or RevenueCat, as described below.
The information involved depends on the features you choose, your permissions, and your device settings. This policy should be read together with the Terms of Use.
02. Your content on your device
The app stores the material you import or create, including video, audio, images, captions, teleprompter scripts, thumbnails, project settings, editing drafts, edit history, and imported fonts. It also stores preferences and information needed to manage projects and Pro access.
Video editing, rendering, and portrait background removal run on your device. Portrait segmentation uses image frames to separate a person from the background; the app does not use this feature to identify people or create a face identity profile.
The app does not operate a developer-hosted media upload service. Your content may leave your device when you enable the optional Apple features below, use system backup, or choose to export, save, or share it.
03. Speech recognition: your choice
Caption generation tries supported on-device speech recognition. Enhanced recognition may download an Apple-managed speech model, which needs an internet connection for the download. Device, system, and language support affect which local engine is available.
Apple online recognition is off by default. The app asks you to confirm before you enable “Allow Apple online recognition.” Once enabled, Apple’s online service may receive the audio needed for recognition when the app uses that engine. A local recognition failure does not silently enable this option.
You can turn online recognition off in the app’s caption settings and manage speech permission in iOS Settings. Apple’s handling of its speech services is described in Siri, Dictation & Privacy.
04. Optional iCloud sync
iCloud sync is an optional Pro feature and is off by default. If you turn it on, the app uses your Apple iCloud storage to sync projects, media, captions, editing drafts and history, teleprompter scripts, and related sync metadata between your devices. An Apple account, available iCloud storage, network access, and an eligible Pro entitlement may be required.
Sync stores revisions and media objects, including older versions used to reconcile changes. A project deletion is synchronized with a deletion record; it is not a permanent purge of every previously stored cloud revision or media object. Conflict copies may also be retained.
Turning sync off stops the app’s sync activity; it does not erase local work or data already in iCloud. See “Retention and deletion” below before using sync for sensitive content. Apple’s services are also subject to the Apple Privacy Policy.
05. Purchases and Pro access
Apple processes App Store payments. Caption Muse uses RevenueCat to load purchase options, check Pro entitlements, and support purchases and restoration. This service can initialize and check access when the app opens, before you make a purchase.
Purchase services may process a randomly generated app user identifier, App Store receipt or transaction information, product and subscription status, and technical information such as app version, device or operating system details, request times, and IP address. The app does not ask you to create a Caption Muse account or enter a payment card into the app.
Caption Muse does not attach your editing media or scripts to purchase-service requests. More information is available in RevenueCat’s privacy information. Apple and RevenueCat may retain transaction records under their own obligations and service arrangements.
06. Permissions and controls
- Photos and selected files: to import the media you select and, with the relevant permission, save finished exports to Photos.
- Camera: to record video when you choose a recording feature.
- Microphone: to record sound for video or voiceover features.
- Speech recognition: to generate captions using supported Apple speech APIs.
You can decline or revoke permissions in iOS Settings. The associated feature may then be unavailable. iCloud sync and Apple online recognition have separate in-app controls. Revoking permission or turning a feature off does not automatically delete material already created or synchronized.
07. This website
These static pages do not include analytics scripts, advertising pixels, contact forms, third-party embeds, or cookies set by the site’s code. Fonts and images are served as local site assets.
When you open a page, your browser still sends the network information needed to deliver it, such as your IP address, browser information, and requested URL. A hosting provider may retain ordinary access or security logs depending on the deployment. External links take you to sites with their own privacy practices.
08. Use of information and service providers
Information is used to provide the features you request: storing and editing projects, recognizing speech, syncing work if enabled, verifying purchases, restoring access, and maintaining service reliability. The app does not include an advertising SDK or a separate behavioral analytics SDK.
Apple provides system permissions, speech services, iCloud, and App Store transactions; RevenueCat supports purchase management. These providers may process information in other countries under their service arrangements. The app’s local-first design does not mean that optional cloud or purchase services remain entirely on your device.
Where privacy law requires a legal basis, processing depends on the feature: providing the requested service, your consent for optional permissions or online recognition, and applicable legal obligations for transactions. You can withdraw an optional permission or disable an optional feature without undoing earlier processing.
09. Retention and deletion
- Local work: remove projects or scripts from their library to remove them from the active app library. Project deletion also removes its drafts, edit history, and media no longer referenced by another project. Shared media, imported fonts, saved exports, original media, files shared with other apps, device backups, and other copies may remain and need separate management.
- iCloud: deleting a project in the app records the deletion for sync but does not purge all stored revisions or media. Turning sync off leaves existing cloud data in place. Review Apple’s iCloud storage and backup controls to manage separately retained copies; an in-app deletion alone is not a complete cloud-erasure command.
- Purchase records: removing the app or a project does not delete App Store or RevenueCat transaction records and does not cancel a subscription. Their retention may be required to verify purchases, handle refunds, prevent fraud, or meet legal obligations.
Retention in device backups, iCloud, and third-party purchase systems is also affected by those systems’ settings and policies. Keep independent copies of work you need before deleting anything.
10. Security and your privacy rights
The app uses the storage and permission controls provided by iOS and the selected service providers. No device, network, or cloud service can guarantee absolute security. Protect your device and Apple account, and consider whether a clip includes someone else’s private information before importing or sharing it.
Depending on your location, privacy law may give you rights to access, correct, export, delete, or restrict the processing of personal information, withdraw consent, or complain to a relevant data protection authority. The app’s editing, export, deletion, permission, and sync controls let you manage much of the information held on your device. Apple and RevenueCat also provide information about data handled through their services in the policies linked above.
11. Children and policy changes
A parent or guardian should review permissions, cloud settings, purchases, and any recording or sharing by a child. Do not include personal information about children or other people in your content without the permissions required by applicable law.
We may update this policy when the app, service providers, or applicable requirements change. The date above identifies the current version. Material changes will be communicated through an appropriate in-app or website notice when required.
